OUR MISSION

At Mothers of the Amazon, our mission is to protect the Amazon Rainforest and the health of its indigenous communities for future generations.

Mothers in the Amazon are at the frontlines of the defense of the largest rainforest in the world, raising the next generation of forest guardians that will ensure the protection of the Amazon for future generations.

At Mothers of the Amazon, we recognize that the health of our planet and the future of our children relies intrinsically on the protection of the Amazon rainforest and those who defend it.

We work directly with indigenous leaders and institutions on community development, focusing on critical initiatives that improve indigenous health, protect and restore land, and preserve indigenous culture.

WHO WE ARE

Mothers of the Amazon is a global network of forest advocates

Mothers of the Amazon was an initiative founded in 2018 by a concerned mother, Bane Saleh, as a response to her child – and all of our children – facing the global climate crisis. As a sustainability strategist, she realized that the Amazon, nearing its tipping point, is our greatest ally in mitigating the global climate crisis. Therefore, the most effective climate action is rainforest defense. With long-standing relationships with indigenous leaders and elders already in place, Mothers of the Amazon grew into a global network of multi-disciplinary forest advocates co-led by Yube Huni Kuin, Vice-President of the Huni Kuin Federation and the former Secretary of AMAAIAC (Association Movement of Indigenous Agroforestry Agents of Acre). Under the initial advisory and fiscal sponsorship of the Earthways Foundation and its founder Andrew Beath (who served as Treasurer and was on the Board of Directors of Amazon Watch for over 25 years), Mothers of the Amazon has now developed into a 501(3)c non profit organization that collaborates with established organizations and indigenous institutions advocating for the protection of the Amazon.

Our network is composed of indigenous leaders, foundations, sustainability strategists, agro-forestry agents, architects, environmental engineers, health scientists, doctors, water treatment specialists, lawyers, permaculture specialists, educators, writers and filmmakers.
